Visitor Accommodation at HartRAO
HartRAO is located 30 minutes drive from the nearest town, Krugersdorp. We
therefore provide accommodation at the Observatory for use by staff,
students, and visitors. The accommodation is only available to bone fide
users of the observatory. Accomodating staff and professional visitors such
as astronomers, engineers and graduate students takes precedence.
Accomodation is provided at nominal cost and comprises:
- A hostel, which has six single bedrooms, lounge, fully equipped kitchen
(no microwave), two bathrooms, a shower, and three toilets. It is reserved
for staff and professional visitors.
- A house, with three inside bedrooms. Each
bedroom has two single beds. The house has a lounge/diningroom, a bathroom
with toilet, a shower, a second toilet and a fully equipped kitchen (no
microwave). It is reserved for staff and professional visitors.
- A cottage with two bedrooms, lounge/diningroom, bathroom and kitchen (no
microwave). One bedroom has two beds, one has a single bed. The cottage is
reserved for staff and professional visitors.
- The Visitors Centre (VC) has three bedrooms, each with two single beds.
There are four bathrooms, each with a shower. There is no kitchen, but a
double hot plate and refrigerator are available. There is no crockery,
cutlery or cooking utensils. The Visitors Centre is normally reserved for
use by the Science Awareness Programme for groups such as schools on
educational visits, but may be used by staff and professional visitors when
required.
Internet Access
Wired internet connections are available in all the accommodation.
Radio Frequency Interference Control
Note that there are no microwave ovens at HartRAO as they interfere with the
2.3GHz receivers on the radio telescopes. Conventional stoves are used
for cooking.
The use of radio transmitters including cellphones, wireless mice, wi-fi
and bluetooth is not permitted as they may interfere with science
operations.
Food
In general food is not supplied and visitors should bring their own.
However arrangements can be made to buy food for professional visitors, for
example in advance of arrival. The nearest shops and restaurants are 15
minutes drive distant, near Hartebeestpoort Dam and at Broederstroom, north of
HartRAO.
